Edna Schmidt Named Anchor on Univision Network's ``Noticiero Univision Fin De Semana''; Joins Co-Anchor Sergio Urquidi On Weekend Edition of Highly-Rated News Program
A very familiar face on Spanish-language TV, Edna Schmidt was mostrecently the national news anchor for "Noticias Al Minuto" onTeleFutura, Univision's sister network. She provided Hispanic viewerswith culturally relevant up-to-the-minute news reports since thenetwork's launch in 2002. She has also regularly appeared as acorrespondent and substitute anchor on various Univision news programsincluding "Ultima Hora" and "Despierta America" and is a regularcontributor on the award-winning primetime news magazine "Aqui yAhora."
During her distinguished 17-year career, Schmidt has covered newsevents of national importance including the September 11th attacks onthe World Trade Center, the ensuing aftermath from Ground Zero, theAnthrax scare in Washington, D.C., and the execution of the OklahomaCity Bomber, Timothy McVeigh. She has also reported on many notablepolitical events, anchoring TeleFutura's coverage of the 2005 State ofthe Union Address, the 2004 Presidential Debates and the 1996Democratic Convention. Her excellence in journalism has beenrecognized with several regional Emmy nominations, includingIndividual Excellence on Camera as a News Anchor in 1997 andOutstanding Reporting and Anchoring during the Primary Elections in1995.

Schmidt began her career in broadcast journalism as a newscorrespondent in Puerto Rico with WSJN-TV (Ch.24), a 24-hour localnews channel, and was quickly promoted to weekend news anchor. Shejoined the Univision family in 1992 as the main anchor for WCIU,Channel 26 in Chicago and subsequently for WGBO, Channel 66, whenUnivision acquired that station. In 2000, Schmidt was named nationalcorrespondent for Univision Network News, covering Chicago and theMidwest. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and has completed aMaster's program in Journalism from Iowa State University.
